Do you want to know why this Facebook meme makes me so angry?

I was one of those children. One of those thousands of children, at the mercy of an adult. Unable to stop the abuse, too afraid to say a word to anyone about it, because of course, no one would believe you, and if they did, well,…

Not only does the meme accomplish nothing, now there are things going around about how pedophiles are using it because young people will add them as friends more readily if they have a cartoon profile picture.

memes for awareness do not create awareness. who is not aware that children are abused or that cancer sucks or that we all miss loved ones who have died? many of these things are just cries for attention or a need to have someone else validate your feeling of being ‘caring’.

Apparently memes for awareness suddenly expose people to the reality of abuse/cancer. I mean, if it weren’t for these things, Ana, half of facebook would not know about breast cancer or child abuse. And I am a horrible bitch for calling this meme lazy and slightly offensive. Again, because those who have not been abused are in a better place to tell the abused what should and should not bother them when it’s being used to represent a part of their past/present.

It is lazy and offensive. I agree. And as someone who had a family member that I loved die of cancer earlier this year, I find the cancer memes annoying and stupid.
